Sgraffito derives from an Italian word meaning “to scratch.” This technique involves applying two or more layers of a contrasting slip or glaze to a piece of pottery and then using a sgraffito tool to scratch the surface, revealing the natural clay or color underneath. At DiamondCore® Tools, the sgraffito technique is one of our favorites! Using the power of diamonds, hardwood handles and comfortable foam grips, we’ve created tools that will help you to make sgraffito pottery right each time.
L1 Diamond Sgraffito Stylus Tool - Needle/1mm Ball

One end of the pottery tool features a diamond needle tip, and the other has a 1 mm diamond ball tip. Small details will no longer be a struggle, and you’ll be able to accomplish your goals for your next pottery project. Using this ceramics tool can also help you clean up bisque lines and grooves!
L2 Diamond Sgraffito Stylus Tool - 0.7 mm Ball/2mm Crown
One end of the DiamondCore L2 sgraffito tool features a diamond “crown” tip, and the other has a 0.7 mm diamond ball tip. If you specialize in carving out arcs and sgraffito detailing, this is the best pottery tool for you!
“If I could only have one carving sgraffito tool this would be the one! The carving tip is absolutely the perfect size for outlines and thin designs. Also great for signatures and writing. The crown tip is perfect for cleaning up greenware and bisque. This is always my first choice when I'm doing fine carvings on greenware. It feels like DiamondCore made this tool special for me, it's just the best! And of course it is light weight with soft cushions for my fingers. So even if I am carving for 8 hours my hands are not weighed down from a bulky tool.” —Mariah L.
“I was a portrait artist before I started doing pottery. Now, a lot of my work features sgraffito and these tools feel natural to use like a pencil. They are strong and have nice grips which give them a high quality look & feel. I love how easily they carve through clay, especially when bone dry. This tool has a unique shape that allows for more calligraphy style lines. The other side is smooth and gives nice rounded lines.” —Aba
L3 Diamond Sgraffito Stylus Tool - Small Football/Large Football
The L3 Diamond Stylus Tool features a small 1.7 mm diamond “football” tip on one end, and the other has a larger 2.5 mm diamond “football” tip. This pottery tool is for detailing bone dry clay, making it perfect for sgraffito designs! Plus, with the power of diamond tips, this tool will be long-lasting, helping you get your pottery projects done right.

“For fine detail carving and sgraffito this three piece package offers 6 choices that will cover every situation. The L1 and L2 give you diversity to create fine to medium lines for carving and sgraffito. The L3 works great for scratching off larger areas of glaze. The sharp diamond surfaces are great for keeping your carving area where you want it, avoiding peeling off the surrounding areas. I am so pleased with the quality of these tools. I also especially love how light weight they are in my hand. As well as the comfy finger cushions that they come with. So if I am carving for 8 hours straight I am not feeling as fatigued in my hands as I do when using other companies heavy and bulky tools. Once you move to DiamondCore it is impossible to go back to bulky tools!!” —Athena M.
