Exploring the Art of Sgraffito With DiamondCore® Tools
By carefully scratching through a surface layer of clay or slip, you can create intricate designs and striking contrasts that make each piece of pottery unique.
This technique, known as sgraffito pottery, has continued to captivate artists and art lovers alike over thousands of years with its blend of creativity, precision and timeless appeal.
Our team at DiamondCore® Tools wanted to help you take your sgraffito art to the next level with tools that simplify the intricate and meticulous process.
What is Sgraffito?
Sgraffito is a pottery technique that involves applying layers of contrasting clay slips or underglazes on pottery. Then you carefully scrape or slice away parts of the top layer to expose the lower layers.
This process allows ceramic artists to achieve a range of effects, from delicate patterns and detailed imagery to bold, expressive designs.
The term "sgraffito" originates from the Italian word "sgraffiare," which means "to scratch." It has been used in various forms of art and architecture over the years, particularly in Italy during the Renaissance. Later, sgraffito was adapted to pottery and ceramics, where it remains a popular decorative technique today.
How We Developed the Best Sgraffito Tools on the Market
At DiamondCore® Tools, we love exceeding your expectations, which is exactly why we began the innovation and development of our sgraffito stylus tools.
Early versions of the DiamondCore® sgraffito tools included wood-handled hand tools with metal tips on them. These were inspired by common needle tools, but the goal was to achieve the smoothest line possible.
As we received feedback from artists, the tools evolved to have actual diamond-abrasive metal tips that cut through the outer layer of pieces with ease. Despite these earlier versions being created around 2017, many of these tools with older, striped foam grips can still be found in pottery studios with the diamond tips still going strong.
In years past, these tools were painstakingly built a few at a time within a small woodworking tent. Today, DiamondCore® can build hundreds of L Series tools from quality materials in a matter of hours, making them ready for distribution around the world.

Our L1 features a needle-like tip and a 1 mm ball tip on the other end. Our L2 has a 0.7 ball tip and a small, crown-like tip on the other. Our L3 has two sizes of small football shapes. Whether you want a tip for cursive writing, wispy lines, or quick removal of material to define a shape, the many tips of our L Series tools have you covered.
Cleanup of Bisque Lines/Grooves
